Job Description

Actively recruiting attorneys who want to excel in the courtroom and possess a deep passion for serving victims of crime and restoring trust in the criminal justice system. We have a real need in the San Luis Valley for lawyers who are dedicated to changing a community’s perspective on justice.

Our sole mission in this Valley is to change the hearts and minds of community members and re-establish trust through fair, equitable, and compassionate prosecution. If this seems like the type of purpose-driven career you would like to explore, we want to talk to you.

Why Choose the San Luis Valley?

  • Competitive Pay & Low Cost of Living: We offer salaries consistent with Denver metro area offices, while the cost of living in the San Luis Valley is a fraction of the cost to live up north. Real estate here is extremely affordable, offering opportunities to own acres for the cost of a condo in Denver.

  • Unmatched Outdoor Recreation: Spectacular 360 degree views of the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountain ranges. We are located roughly an hour away from world-class skiing at Wolf Creek, Monarch, and Taos.

  • Rich Culture & History: A region steeped in Colorado history, home to multi-generation ranching and farming communities.

Key Responsibilities

As a Deputy District Attorney, your duties will include:

  • Litigation & Trial Work: Preparing and trying cases involving felony, misdemeanor, and juvenile crimes. Presenting evidence, litigating legal issues through oral argument and written motions, conducting jury selection, preparing jury instructions, and presenting closing arguments.

  • Case Evaluation: Reviewing criminal investigations to evaluate appropriate charges, potential plea dispositions, and likelihood of trial success.

  • Law Enforcement Collaboration: Working closely with police agencies across the San Luis Valley on legal questions, warrant reviews, and ongoing investigations.

  • On-Call & Scene Response: Periodically serving on-call to provide immediate legal advice to law enforcement and the public, as well as attending crime scenes for serious felonies when requested.

  • Community Leadership: Serving as a voice for victims, arguing for appropriate sentences, and representing the Office’s commitment to professionalism, transparency, and ethical standards.
